Guide
EV towing guide for Australians
The right trailer for an EV is not just “under the tow rating”. You need to think about mass, drag, ball weight, charging access and realistic range.
1. Check the legal ratings
Confirm braked towing capacity, unbraked towing capacity, towball download, GCM/GVM and payload. Do not rely on marketing claims alone.
2. Reduce drag first
At highway speed, frontal area and shape can matter as much as weight. Aerodynamic campers usually suit EVs better than boxy caravans.
3. Plan charging bays
Some chargers are awkward with a trailer attached. Plan stops with pull-through access or safe unhitching space.
EV-friendly trailer checklist
- Low tare mass and sensible ATM.
- Low frontal area and rounded or tapered shape.
- Verified towball download within your EV's limit.
- Electric brakes and suitable brake controller setup.
- Solar, DC-DC charging and lithium house battery if camping off-grid.
- Real owner towing range data where possible.
- Manufacturer specs that clearly state weights and dimensions.
Important: This site is a research directory. Always verify current specifications with the trailer maker, vehicle manual, towbar installer, insurer and relevant Australian road rules before towing.
